Merkurius adalah planet kecil yang paling dekat dengan matahari. Ukurannya lebih kecil dibandingkan dengan beberapa satelit kecil dari planet. Karena kedekatan dengan matahari dan ukurannya kecil maka Merkurius sangat sulit dilihat tanpa menggunakan teleskop, akan tetapi bisa dilihat segera setelah Matahari terbenam atau sebelum matahari terbit.
Merkurius memerlukan waktu 587 hari untuk berotasi pada porosnya dan 88 hari untuk berputar pada orbitnya, mengelilingi matahari. Planet ini berotasi paling cepat. Jarak merkurius dari matahari tidak selalu sama karena planet ini mempunyai orbit yang sempit dan memanjang dengan bentuknya seperti lemon. Merkurius bergerak sangat lamban. Satu hari di merkurius sama dengan 59 hari di bumi. Satu bagian di planet ini selalu mendapat cahaya dari matahari lebih lama sehingga suhu pada siang hari mencapai lebih dari 350 derajad Celcius. Suhu ini cukup untuk melelehkan kaleng dan timah. Bagian lain planet ini yang maalm hari suhu bisa serendah -170 derajat Celcius.
Gambar planet merkurius pernah diambil oleh roket penyelidik Mariner10 yang menujukkan bahwa planet merkurius seperti bulan. Merkurius mempunyai kawah dan jurang berbatu serta tidak mempunyai satelit serta atmosfer.
