System tatasurya terletak pada jarak sekitar 30.000 hingga 33.000 tahun cahaya dari pusat Milky Way galaksi. Matahari adalah sebuah bintang seperti bintang lain dengan satu-satunya perbedaan, yaitu: matahari lebih dekat dengan kita dibandingkan bintang yang lainnya. Matahari mempunyai keluarga sendiri, yaitu mereka ada dalam sistem tata surya. System tata surya terdiri dari delapan planet, satelit mereka, asteroid, komet, meteorid, dan serpih angkasa lainnya.
Planet adalah benda langit yang seperti bumi kita, berevolusi mengelilingi matahari. Planet tidak memiliki cahaya sendiri. Planet terlihat terang karena cahaya matahari yang jatuh dan memantul ke permukaan. delapan planet tersebut adalah: merkurius, venus, bumi, mars, Jupiter, saturnus, Uranus, neptunus. Merkurius, venus, Jupiter, dan saturnus bisa dilihat bumi dengan mata telanjang. Planet yang telah dikenal para astronom ribuan tahun yang lalu. Tiga planet: Uranus, neptunus, dan Pluto ditemukan kemudian setelah ditemukan teleskop. Uranus ditemukan pada tahun 1781, Neptunus pada tahun 1846.
